During the mutiny of 1857 he again showed his unswerving and conspicuous loyalty to Government, by sending an auxiliary force to Delhi (in spite of temptation from the King of Delhi), Gwalior and Dholpur, and keeping open communications on the Grand Trunk road. Lord Canning said that he had surpassed the former achievements of his race by the constancy and courage he evinced during the mutiny. His services were acknowledged by a grant of territory and by additional titles and powers, and an adoption sanad : K.C.S.I. in 1861 : Member of the Governor General's Legislative Council in 1862 : died Nov. 13, 1862. |
