Entry  Born Aug. 28, 1793 : son of William Ryan: educated at Trinity College, Cambridge : called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, 1817 : appointed, in 1826, a Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court at Calcutta: knighted, and became Chief Justice of Bengal, 1833, until he retired in 1843 : President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, B B : became a Privy Councillor, and Member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, 1843 : Railway Commissioner, 1846 : Member of the Board of Trade, 1848 : Assistant Controller of the Exchequer, 1851-62 : Civil Service Commissioner, 1855, and President of the Commission in 1862 : and its guiding spirit : Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, 1871-4 : Vice-President of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1847-75 : F.G.S., and F.R.S. : died Aug. 22, 1875 : author of some legal works.
