Morehead (q.v.) ; born 1805 : arrived at Madras, 1825 : dealt well and strongly with a native outbreak connected with the murder of Macdonald of the Civil Service at Cuddapah in 1832 : was made a Judge of the Sadr Court in 1846, and in 1850 was deputed to hold an inquiry in Ceylon relating to Lord Torrington's administration : while Member of Council, Madras, from 1857 to 1862, he acted twice as Governor, for a month in 1860 on Sir C. E. Trevelyan's recall, and for 6 months in 1860-61 after Sir H. G. Ward's death. He was Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University. But for ill-health he might have been a Member of the Governor- General's Supreme Council in 1862 : retired in Oct. 1862 : died at Edinburgh, his native city, Dec. 1, 1863. |
