Body of text  MATTHEW BOWIE, born 1800, fourth son of George Bowie, farmer, Galston, educated at University of Glasgow, MA (1818), licensed by Presbytery of Linlithgow 9th September 1824, appointed junior chaplain, Indian Establishment 1831, ordained 29th June 1831, promoted to chaplain in 1838, demitted in 1848, admitted to this parish (Kinghorn Easter) 11th May 1848, DD (Glasgow, May 1858), died at Wanstead, Essex, 16th November 1869. He married July 1831, Jane (died 21st June 1884), daughter of George McHardy, minister of Spynie, and had issue, George McHardy Birnie, captain Indian Army, born 7th August 1835, Mary Ann, born 27th August 1837, Matthew Morton, Indian Civil Service, born 19th May 1839, Francis Proctor, BA Glasgow 1860, MA 1861, BD (Edinburgh 1865), born 24th June 1841, drowned on eve of license 31st July 1865, John Hamilton, Agra Bank, London, born 28th February 1843, Margaret Elizabeth, born 16th October 1844, Milborough Shand, Born 13th March 1848, died 8th January 1851, Robert Wylie, born 20th March 1850.
