Service  Major J. W. Carnegie, C.B., as Magistrate of Lucknow, by means of his Police, quelled an insurrection in that City on 31st May 1857, Formed one of the original garrison of the Lucknow Residency. Present throughout the whole of the subsequent operations before Lucknow with the Force under Sir J. Outram, G.C.B., and at the siege and capture of Lucknow in March 1858, where he was twice hit and had a horse shot under him. Was subsequently employed as Civil Officer with the Kupurthulla Contingent, and was present with it in several actions and skirmishes with the rebels. Afterwards accompanied the Column under the Command of Sir G. Barker, K.C.B. Brevet Majority, Medal and 2 Clasps. Permitted to reckon 1 years extra service for defence of Lucknow Residency.
