CommentIndex of names from 'A Hand Book to St Mary's Church, Fort St. George, Madras', written by the Rev. Charles Herbert Malden, Canon of St George's Cathedral, Madras and Garrison Chaplain, 1893-4 and 1901-6. The transcription is of The Old Tombstones | Outside St Mary's Church. The other memorials recorded in the book are of those inside the church.

The book contains a useful checklist (as at 1905) of the church's registers from 1680.

The book is in the library of the East India Club in St James's Square, London SW1Y 4LH.

Death  21 December 1698    
Inscription  Here lieth the body of SAMUEL BROWN; who departed this life July 5th 1695, together with his father and mother SAMUEL BROWN and ANN, afterwards FOQUET, deceased, the former December 21st 1698, the latter September 1st 1715; with them lyeth also interr'd the body of CHARLES son of CHARLES LONG, by Elizabeth his wife, their sister and daughter. He dyed June the 5th 1720.    
Comment by Rev. Charles Herbert Malden  Samuel Brown was a surgeono. He accidentally poisoned Mr James Wheeler, a member of council, and then wrote to Mr Higginson Governor asking that he might be punished. Browns (sic) collection of dried plants are now in the British Museum. Charles Long was the child of Charles Long Chaplain of Fort St George from 1713 to 1721.
