At Steven's Hotel, Bond St, aged 68. Member of the Council of India. Born at Bodmin, Cornwall, 3rd son of the Rev. Edmund Gilbert, by a dau. of Henry Garnet, esq. of Bristol. Entered the Bengal Army in 1800. Various battles, finished the Punjab campaign where 16,000 Sikh soldiers surrended to him. In 1850 was made a provisional Member of the Council of India. Made a baronet, 1851. He married in 1814 a dau. of Major Thomas Ross, of the Royal Artillery, by Isabella, dau. of Macleod of Rasay. The present baronet, who was born at Calcutta in 1816, was appointed British Consul at Alexandria in Feb. 1848] |
