In 1811 went with his regiment to Java. In 1813 suppressed an insurrection in eastern Java where Col. Fraser and Capt. M'Pherson had been murdered. In 1817 he returned with his Highlanders to Aberdeen, being the only officer remaining with his regiment of 42 who landed at Calcutta in 1797.
