Indies : Chief Engineer and Lt-Colonel at Madras, 1770 : Member of Council : Chief Engineer in operations against Tanjore, 1771-5 : renovated the defences of Fort St. George at Madras, 1778 : served at the Cape against the Dutch and under Stuart against Tippoo, 1783 : at the siege of Cuddalore, 1783 : under Cornwallis in 1791 against Tippoo : took Savandrug, Dec. 1791: at siege of Seringapatam, 1792 : Maj- General, 1797 : superintended operations of 1798-9 : went home in 1802 : M.P. for Horsham, 1802 : died Aug. 24, 1804.
