Co.'s Madras Native infantry, 1801 : transferred to Bombay: was A.D.C. to Jonathan Duncan, Governor of Bombay : served against the Mahrattas, 1802 : in 1802, first Assistant at Baroda, in the Political service and Secretary to the Resident : Resident at Baroda, 1807-19 : retired as a Major in 1822 : Director of the E. I. Co., 1827 : Chairman of the Directors, 1830 : Baronet, 1836 : M.P., 1837 : Governor of Bombay, May, 1839 to April, 1841. A scholarship called after him was founded in his honour, and his bust placed in the Town Hall. He died Jan. 28, 1846. |
