	Entry	I.C.S : born 1832 : educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge : twice won the Chancellor's medal for English verse : went to Bengal in the Civil Service, 1856, and retired in 1889 : Revenue Secretary to Government of Bengal, and Member of the Bengal Legislative Council : President of the Opium Commission, 1883: Member of the Board of Revenue, Bengal, and of the Governor- General's Legislative Council for some years : President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, and presided at the Special Centenary Meeting, Jan. 15, 1884: C.S.I. , distinguished as a scholar and writer.
