Co.'s 3rd Bombay Infantry, 1843 : Major, 1863 : retired, 1864 : at the siege of Multan, 1848 : in the Panjab campaign, 1849-50 : at Gujarat : in the first frontier expedition, 1850, against tribes on the Swat border : wrote, and illustrated, an account of the District of Peshawar, 1849- 50 : Assistant Commissioner in the Panjab, 1852-9 : highly proficient in Oriental languages : wrote a Pushto grammar 1855 : a thesaurus of Hindustani-English technical terms, 1859 : Pushto prose and poetical selections : Pushto-English dictionary : Afghan poetry, 16th to 19th century, with English translation : Aesop's Fables in Pushto : Translation of the Tabakat-i-Nasiri, i.e. a general history of Muhammadan dynasties in Asia, 810- 1260, a.d. : Notes on Afghanistan and Beluchistan, 1888 : numerous articles on geography, history, and ethnology in the J.A.S.B., 1854-1905 : engaged on a History of Herat and its Dependencies and Annals of Khurasan from its Conquest by the Muhammadans, and three other works on Eastern History.
