Entry  Born about 1738: educated at the R.M.A. Woolwich : entered the Royal Artillery, 1757, and was at the siege of Guadeloupe, the Havannah, and Bellisle : joined the Bengal Artillery as Major, 1768 : Colonel in 1779 : was Warren Hastings' second in the latter's duel with (Sir) Philip Francis on Aug. 17, 1780 : was sent in 1781 in command of a force of five regts., despatched through Orissa and the Northern Sircars, to the aid of the Madras Presidency : engaged under Sir Eyre Coote, 1781-3, against Hyder and the French : returned to Bengal, 1785 : was given a sword of honour for his services in the Carnatic : died on the Hughli above Calcutta, June, 15, 1789 : for the last 3 years of his life was senior officer of the Bengal Army.
