Peacock : born 1810 : practised as a special pleader : called to the bar, at the Inner Temple, 1836 : made his reputation by obtaining the acquittal of Daniel O'Connell on appeal to the House of Lords, 1843 : Q.C., 1850 : and Bencher of his Inn : Legal Member of the Supreme Council, April, 1852, to June, 1859 : in charge of the Indian Penal Code when it became law : Chief Justice of the Supreme Court at Calcutta, 1859-62, and of the High Court, 1862-70 : knighted 1859 : for some time Vice-President of the Legislative Council : retired, 1870 : Member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, 1872 : died Dec. 3, 1890.
