	Entry	Born in 1817 : educated at the Hare School and Hindu College : appointed Assistant Secretary to the British Indian Association, 1851 ; Vice-President, 1869, and, later, President : was a Member of the Epidemic Fever Commission, 1864, after which he held the theory that obstructed drainage is the chief cause of fever : was thrice Member of the Bengal Legislative Council : Sheriff of Calcutta, 1874 : C.S.I., 1876 : Raja, 1877. As a manager of large estates in early life, and as a landowner, he had a great knowledge of zamindari affairs, which was most useful in his public life : he died April 20,. 1879
