Co., 1822 : was M.P. for Northallerton : Member of the Council of India, 1858-68 : made Baronet in 1868 for his public services as Member of Council : died Oct. 4, 1872. living of Great Marlow from 1862 until he went to Calcutta as Bishop in March, 1867 : was energetic in touring round his extensive diocese : and in his visitations as Metropolitan : he belonged to the High Church party : desired to increase the number of the Bishops in India, pressing specially for the erection of a Bishopric in Lahore : as a good linguist he mastered several native languages, so as to be able to preach in them : he was much loved and respected by all classes, including the natives : died at Rawal Pindi on March 15, 1876 : the Government erected a memorial to him in the Cathedral at Calcutta : the Notification issued by the Government testified to Dr. Milman's indefatigable energy, his charity and munificence, his zeal in promoting all good works, especially the education of the poorer classes of Europeans in India, and his broad and benevolent sympathies with all classes of the community. |
