Co : appointed Resident at the Court of Shuja-ud-daula, Nawab of Oudh, by Warren Hastings, 1774 : recalled from Lucknow in the same year, after the Rohilla war, by the majority in Council, but reinstated in 1776 : seems to have incurred the displeasure of Hastings by his slowness in pressing Asaf-ud daula, the new Nawab, for the treasure of the Begams of Oudh : later, Middleton was called as a witness at the trial of W. Hastings, 1788-94.
