He obtained his Commission in 1854 in the Crimea : Lt-Colonel, 1872 : served all through the Crimea : in the mutiny was at Sir Colin Campbell's relief of Lucknow, at Cawnpur, Kalinadi, siege and capture of Lucknow, Alaganj, Bareli and other actions, gaining the Victoria Cross for distinguished bravery : died in the hospital at Woolwich, that he might ""die among the soldiers" |
