| Surname | Manning | | First Name(s) | Elizabeth Adelaide | | Birth Year | 1828 | | Death Year | 1905 | | Entry | Daughter of James Manning, Serjeant-at- Law, Recorder of Oxford : on the death, in 1877, of Miss Mary Carpenter (q.v.), who had formed the National Indian Association at Bristol in 1870, its centre was transferred to London : Miss Manning became its Honorary Secretary, and began then to edit the Indian Magazine and Review, carrying on these works until her death : she twice visited India in connexion with the Branches of the Association, and to inquire into education, especially of women and girls : she often lectured and wrote papers on India and education : was connected, as pupil and one of the Governing Body, with Girton College from its foundation : and was on the Council of various Societies for promoting education and the progress of women : she received the Kaisar-i-Hind medal in June, 1904 : her stepmother, Mrs. Manning, who died April 1, 1871, wrote Life in Ancient India, and Ancient and Mediaeval India: died Aug. 10, 1905. |
