C, and son of Dr. Hugh Macpherson : educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge : called to the bar at the Inner Temple, 1837 : went out to practise at the Calcutta bar, 1846 : Master of Equity in the Supreme Court there, 1848-59 : published the Procedure of the Civil Courts of India : editor of the Quarterly Review, 1860-7 : Secretary to the Indian Law Commission, 1861-70 : practised before the Privy Council : Legal Adviser to the India Office, 1874-9 : Secretary in the Judicial Department, 1879: retired in 1882 : died April 20, 1893.
