Entry  Joined the Army Medical Service in Madras in 1836 : was in China in 1840-2, and wrote an account of his time there : in the Russian war, 1855, head of the medical staff of the Turkish contingent : wrote his Antiquities of Kertch and Researches in the Cimmerian Bosphorus, 1857 : Inspr-General of the medical service, Madras, 1857 : was an active and advanced sanitary officer : Hon. physician and surgeon to Queen Victoria : died at Merkara, Coorg, June 8, 1867.
