Aged 78. Descended from a good Somersetshire family. Born at Brighton. Joined the 55th Regiment as an ensign. As a captain of the 69th he sailed for the East Indies in 1804, where he remained until 1807, when ill-health drove him home. In 1818 as a colonel went to Madras with the 69th, where he remained until 1821, ""holding for a short time command of the provinces of Malabar and Canara; but ill health again compelled him to leave India, and he was put on board ship in an apparently dying condition. He rallied however during the voyage home.""]     |
