Co.'s Bombay Engineers in 1823 : on leave to the Cape, 1835-7, made an expedition to shoot big game in the interior of South Africa : field engineer to the Army in Sind, 1838 : Superintending Engineer in 1841 : negotiated a commercial treaty with Shoa in Abyssinia : knighted, 1844 : again Superintending Engineer in Bombay : died of fever, Oct. 9, 1848 : published accounts of the game animals of S. Africa : and scientific papers on zoology and certain trees.
