Co.'s service in 1772 : made Resident and Superintendent at Benares, 1788 : suppressed scandals in the administration and infanticide : was Governor of Bombay for the unprecedented time of 16 years from Dec. 27, 1795, to Aug. 11, 1811, dying at Bombay : he recognized a very large number of small chiefs as sovereign princes, a policy which was not elsewhere adopted : his time was synchronous with the later war against Tippoo, the Mahratta wars, and Baird's expedition to Egypt, the pacification of Gujarat and Kattiawar, in all of which he played a great part. He was buried at Bombay, and a monument was erected in his honour, with the inscription He was a good man and a just, and a scroll bearing the words "" Infanticide abolished in Benares and Kattiawar."" |
