After his retiral from India, missionary enterprise became the supreme passion of his life, and all his rich gifts of heart and mind he gave to it unstintedly. By his valuable contributions to the literature of the subject, and his great series of addresses to the General Assembly, he deepened in a remarkable degree the interest of the Church in Christian Missions, and provided an inspiration to all who heard him. He was pre-eminently a missionary statesman, and a singularly beloved figure in the Church of Scotland.
