He took a deep interest in all matters affecting the religious life of India, was the constitutional champion of the rights of the Church of Scotland there, and it was in response to his memorial to the General Assembly of 1824 that the first Foreign Mission Committee of the Church was formed - a step which eventually led to the sending out of Alexander Duff to Calcutta. |
