Register Entry  At Barrackpoor on 10th Aug 1845 Brevet Major Ralph Smith of the 28th Regiment NI Officiating Major of Brigade at that Station and lately Aide-de-Camp to His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief. Major Smith's unvarying kindness of heart prevented his ever making an enemy while his many other estimable qualities ensured him many friends. He died at the moment when he was about to reap the reward of his Services in China and at Maharajpoor and when the Service to which he had been devoted was commencing to wear for him its brighter colours. A comrade who for twenty years knew and loved him now offers this humble tribute to his worth
