| Surname | Meares | | Rank/ occupation | Major | | Death date | 15 Sep 1813 | | Place of death | Java | | Source | Gentleman's Magazine | | Date | Oct 1813 | | Page number | 403 | | Detail | In the Island of Java, in consequence of a wound received whilst leading his men against the deposed Sultan of Palambang on the 1st of September, Major Meares, commanding-officer. The cure was so far advanced as to promise a perfect recovery; but, a violent internal hemorrhage taking place, he expired in three minutes. He is deeply and sincerely regretted by the garrison under his command, as well as by the nativeswhose affection, the equity of his administration, the suavity of his manners, and his uninterrupted attention to their wants, had conciliated in an eminent degree. His remains were the following evening interred with every military honour, under a discharge of 40 minute-guns, corresponding to his age. |
