Robert Meares, 17th Native Infantry, in the East India Companys service, eldest son of the late Wm. M. esq. of Togherstown, co. Westmeath. Capt. M. had proceeded to the neighbouring dependency of Palembang, in the Island of Sumatra, at the taking of which he was present, to quell an insurrection which had broken out under the new-formed government: but, unhappily, when getting over the palisade, and at the moment when his gallantry and conduct had suppressed the rebellion, he received a wound, of which he died a few days after his return to Banca, beloved and regretted by those who knew him best, and whose letters bear testimony to his having been a faithful, brave and active officer. |
