Service  Captain Dickens served during the Punjab Campaign, 48, 49. Present at the actions of Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat, and subsequent pursuit of the Sikhs and Affghans to Peshawur. Medal and 2 Clasps. Served in an expedition against the Affreedies, under Sir Charles Napier, 48, 49. Volunteered with a Company of his Regiment to scale a hill in the possession of the enemy, who had cut up a Detachment of 40 men, under Ensign Sitwell. Drove off the enemy, and brought down the body of Ensign Sitwell, and the four survivors, for which he was personally thanked by Sir Charles Napier. Served during the Sonthal Campaign, 55. Served during the Mutiny at Saugor, 57. Present at four engagements with rebels at Dumoh, and remained there until September 57. Was detached to take possession of the Fort of Rehli, which had been abandoned by the Police, and was twice attacked by the rebels, and drove them off. Joined the Force of Sir H. Rose at Gurhakotah, and was left in charge of the Fort, with instructions to destroy it, and sell the plunder and stores found in the Fort. Served at Saugor from August 58 to January 59, in hunting down rebels in the Saugor District, while Commanding the Police Battalion. In August 58 co-operated with a Detachment under Captain Finch, in attacking a body of rebels of 1,500 strong, and killed 150 of them. In November 58 co-operated with a Moveable Column under Colonel Reece, and was present with it at the attack on Patrakotah, Luckungur, &c, (Passed examination in Punjabee, Hindee, and Oordoo. Received 1,000 Rupees for proficiency in the Native languages.)
