Service  Lieutenant Chalmers served against the rebels as follows: advanced into Major Renauds Moveable Column towards Cawnpore on 30th June 57, and carried his Despatch, announcing the massacre ofthe Cawnpore Garrison, from Sohunda to Allahabad, (40 miles through disturbed country,) joined Havelocks Volunteer Cavalry raised by Major Barrow, and advanced with it to the relief of Cawnpore. Was present at the actions of Futtehpore on the 12th, Aoung and Pandoo Nuddee,16th; battle and re-occupation of Cawnpore, 16th and 17th; Bithoor, 18thJuly; at the first crossing into Oude to relief of Lucknow ; at actions of Oonao and Busseerutgunge, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; at the second crossing into Oude to relief of Lucknow. Present at the actions of Munglewar, 21st; Alum Bagh, 23rd; and first relief of Lucknow, 25th September 57, and its subsequent defence for two months, (twice severely wounded,) during which time he acted as Field Engineer, and was present as such at the assault and capture of the Kings stables and engine house. With the entrenched camp under General Sir J. Outram at Alum Bagh, from 20th November 57 to 12th March 58. Present at Gurtee, and the numerous severe attacks on the Alum Bagh; at the final capture of Lucknow with Colonel Kelly s Moveable Column, in the Azimghur District; from 1st October 58 to 31st January 59 advanced to the Nepal Frontier with it. Present at the action of Ruttunpore with Murrays Jat Horse, and the numerous minor affairs, terminating in the final destruction and extermination of the rebel army. Medal and Clasps.
