Of an Argyleshire family, the son of General Mackellar, who died in 1779 while stationed at Minorca, having married Miss Elizabeth Basiline of Minorca, where his son was born. Entered the navy 1781. Lieut. 1790. Captain 1799. In Sept. 1800 in the Jamaica 26, and in March 1801 to the Terpsichore 32. In the East Indies station, thanked by the Bombay government, in the blockade of Goa, returned to England in 1802. 3 sons & 4 daus. ""His eldest son, John Mackellar, is in the service of the East India Company, in which he is distinguished as a linguist, and received a medal for his services in the late Burmese war.""] |
