Body of text  ROBERT MERRY MACPHAIL, born 5th August 1899 at Bamdah, Bihar, India, son of James Merry Macphail and Janet Russell Wells; educated at Pollokshields Mrs Murdoch's School 1902-9, Glasgow Academy 1909-16, University of Glasgow 1917, 1919-24, MB, ChB (1924); service in HM Forces in France 1917-8; house-surgeon Glasgow Western Infirmary 1924-5; ship's surgeon Shaw Saville Line 1925; medical missionary at Bamdah from 1925; ordained by Presbytery of Bengal 25th March 1934. Married (i) 4th April 1932, Muriel E B, born 21st April 1895, daughter of James McLeownan McMurtrie, died 26th October 1951; married (ii) 20th April 1954, Dorothy Jean, born 21st April 1904, daughter of William Mackay Stewart. Publications � edited Campbell's 'Santali Dictionary', 2nd Edition 1933, 3rd Edition 1953;' An Introduction to Santali', 1947, 1954.
