Description  Had a severe illness, 1833; took a trip home intending to return to India in a year after. However, reports of fortunes to be made in Canada induced Mackenzie to give that country a trial. However, Mackenzie found �things were not what they had been painted, and they much regretted they had ever left the Lewis.� Acted as Agent for the Canadian Land Company; edited a paper in that Company�s interests; had �a roving commission from the British American Land Company.� Acted as a Volunteer during the Mackenzie riots in Canada; was given a commission as a Captain in a battalion of the County Sherbrook in Canada, 28 April 1835; was appointed by Lord Aylmer, Captain-General-in-Chief, Provinces of Lower Canada. Had 100 men who hailed from Lewis [Isle of, in Scotland] placed under him as Volunteers, 1838.
