Description  Sailed for India, his only friend there being Murdo Mackenzie, a cousin. Made the acquaintance of John Colvin, �who eventually became a fast friend, and through his influence got John Mackenzie a berth as an assistant at Attur Factory under Mr. Sterndale.� In Mackenzie�s first year made his debut as an indigo planter, �the factory made a very big season, namely, 1,000 maunds which sold at an average of Rs. 300 per maund, giving an enormous profit which must have gladdened the heart of Macadam Stewart, who was one of the proprietary firm of Gillanders Arbuthnot and Co.�
