He was made a post captain, October 29th 1778; rear admiral, June 1st 1795; vice admiral, February 14th 1799, and admiral of the blue, November 9th 1805. Admiral Rainier was commander in chief in the East Indies for several years, where he amassed a vast property, and returned from there about two years since [Long obituary].
