Served the Campaign in Scinde, and against the Hill Tribes in Beloochistan, under Sir Charles Napier. Served in the Punjab Campaign under Lord Gough, and was present at the battles of Ramnuggur, passage of the Chenah, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat. Medal and 2 Clasps. Served during the rebellion of 57. Medal and Victoria Cross. Received the Cross for meritorious conduct on the 4th June 57, in volunteering and bringing in Captain Brown, Pension Pay-Master, and his wife and infant, and others from a detached bungalow into the Barracks, and for setting fire to the Sepoy lines, with the view of driving out the enemy; also for saving the life of Major Barrett, of the 37th Native Infantry, when a Sepoy was in the act of bayonetting him; also for conveying a message from Major Barrett through a terrific shower of grape, and a cross-fire from the rebels, to the Brigadier. Promoted to an Unattached Ensigncy. |
