Inscription  Sacred to the memory of Major James Peyton, late Commandant of the 5th Regiment, Hyderabad Contingent, and for many years a resident of this place, who died at Ootacamund, 6th January 1884, aged 84 years and 6 days. Loved and respected by all who knew him. This monument is erected by a few of his many friends.
