Entry  Born Dec. 12, 1812 : son of Samuel Laing educated at Houghton-le-Spring, privately, and at St. John's College, Cambridge : second wrangler in 1831 : Fellow called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, in 1837 : Secretary to the Railway Department of the Board of Trade, 1842-6 : Member of Lord Dalhousie's Railway Commission of 1845 : Chairman and Managing Director of the L.B. and S.C Ry., 1848-55 and 1867-94 : Financial Secretary to the Treasury, 1859-60 : Finance Member of the Supreme Council in India from Jan. 1861, to July, 1862 : M.P., 1852-7, 1859, 1865-8, and 1868-85. He wrote Modern Science and Modern Thought, 1885 ; Problems of the Future, 1889 ; Human Origins, 1892 : also India and China : England's Mission in the East, 1863 : he died, Aug. 6, 1897.
