Entry  Son of William Hirst, D.D. : educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge : F.R.S., 1755 : was appointed a Navy chaplain : present at the sieges of Pondicherry and Vellore : in June, 1761, observed the transit of Venus at Madras : was Chaplain at Calcutta, 1762-4 : observed an earthquake and two eclipses : reported on transit of Venus of June, 1769 : went out to India, 1769, as Chaplain to Vansittart and other Commissioners of the E. I. Co. : all drowned at sea after passing the Cape outwards in Dec. 1769.
