Co.'s military service at Bombay in 1764 : in the expeditions against the pirates on the Malabar coast, 1765 : A.D.C. to the Governor of Bombay, 1770 : in 1778 he was in the Army sent by the Bombay Government to the Konkan, which retreated before the Mahrattas in 1770 : by his skilful conduct of the rearguard, he saved the force from utter defeat. He was opposed to the Convention of Wargaum, Jan. 14, 1779 : captured Ahmadabad, Feb. 15, 1780 : was further engaged against the Mahrattas, 20,000 of whom he defeated at Doogaur, Dec. 9, 1780 : his promotion to Lt-Colonel was disallowed by the Court of Directors, but granted by the King in England : Q.M.G. of the Bombay Army, 1788 : in Dec. 1790, he defeated Tippoo's general, Husain Ali, at Calicut : co-operated against Seringapatam in 1791 : captured the French settlement of Mahé in 1793 : Maj-General in 1796 : made Supervisor of Malabar : second in command of the Bombay Army under General Stuart against Tippoo in 1799 : fought at Seedaseer on March 5, 1799 : at the storming of Seringapatam, May 4 : died at Cannanore, Oct. 4, 1799. |
