Entry  Captain : in the military service of the E.I. Co. : M.A.S.B. : the date of his return to England is not recorded : prosecuted his study of Sanskrit at the British Museum and in Paris : when the war with France broke out again after the peace of Amiens, he was detained in Paris as a hostage : taught Sanskrit to French savants : made a Catalogue of the Sanskrit MSS. in the National Library at Paris, which was published by Langles {q.v.) : was Professor of Sanskrit at Haileybury, May, 1806-18 : F.R.S., 1808 : published the Hitopadesa in Sanskrit, 1811 : a treatise on the terms of Sanskrit grammar, 1815 : a key to the Chronology of the Hindus, 1820 : wrote articles on Ancient Indian Geography, and contributed to the Edinburgh Review : died Dec. 30, 1824.
