	Entry	Born April 16, 1746, the date of the battle of Culloden, at which his father, Alexander, was severely wounded : educated at Elgin : apprenticed at Cromarty, 1758, and a clerk in London, 1763-67 : went to India in 1767 : attended to the private trade of Richard Becher, the Resident at Murshidabad : worked hard in the terrible Bengal famine of 1770 : suffered from fever : returned to Scotland, 1771-2 : and went out again as a ""writer"" to Bengal, in 1772-3 : became a ""factor"
