It devolved on him to carry the Bill, in 1833, for the renewal of the E.I. Co.'s charter : the Company retained its political status, but its property was vested in the Crown : the Bishopric in India was increased. He was Secretary for the Colonies, 1835-9 : .made a peer in 1835 : abolished West Indian Slavery : his policy in Canada was attacked on all sides, and he resigned in 1839, receiving a pension and the office of Commissioner of the Land-Tax : died April 23, 1866, and the title became extinct. |
