Entry  I.C.S. : Oriental linguist : joined at Madras in 1796 : Secretary to the Board of Revenue, 1802 : Collector of Madras, 1810 : died of cholera at Ramnad, March 10, 1819. He was an excellent Tamil and Sanskrit scholar : published a commentary and translation of The Sacred Kurral, and exposed the forgery of Sanskrit MSS. at Pondicherry by Jesuit missionaries : he wrote papers on the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages, and was an expert authority on "" Mirasi right "": and on information regarding the Madras Presidency.
