Entry  Born in the Burdwan District : educated in his village school, and at the Oriental Seminary, Calcutta : contributed to the Bengali Prabhakar : editor of the Tattwabodhini Patrika, founded by Debendranath Tagore {q.v.) in connexion with the Adi Brahma Samaj : first headmaster of the Calcutta Normal School : was a pioneer of Bengali prose : wrote several works of considerable merit and erudition : his Religious Sects of India, in Bengali, is still a standard work : studied languages : the first to publish essays in Bengali on scientific subjects : has left a name as a thinker and author of Bengali literature : died 1886.
