Entry  Born in Perthshire : having reached Bencoolen as a sailor, he became Secretary to the Governor : entered the E. I. Co.'s military service in 1760 : Captain, 1764 : Lt-Colonel, 1769 : he published translations from the Persian in 1768 and produced, at Drury Lane, Zingis, a tragedy, 1769 ; Sethona, a tragedy, in 1774 : he also wrote historical works on India. Died at Bhaglapur, July 31, 1779.
