Body of text  MITCHELL, JAMES, born St Ninians, Stirlingshire, 1800; educated at University of Edinburgh; ordained agent of the Scottish Missionary Society August 1822, and stationed at Bankote; transferred to the Church of Scotland Mission August 1835. Joined the Free Church in 1843, and laboured in the Poona district; died on the heights of Matheran 28th March 1866, having been a missionary for forty-three years. His sphere of service was unusually difficult, but he won many converts, and the native congregation ""looked on him emphatically as a father."" He married (1) Margaret (died at Dhapuli 17th January 1832), and had issue - William Kinnaird, ordained missionary at Poona 10th August 1852 [afterwards minister of Free Church, Cluny], born 1827, died 1876 : (2) 1842, Margaret Shaw [appointed in 1841 missionary at Poona under the Ladies' Association of the Church of Scotland], and had issue.
