Body of text  MACKAY, WILLIAM SINCLAIR, born Thurso, 8th May 1807, son of John M and Dorothea Jane Mackie; educated at King's College, Aberdeen, and University of St Andrews; ordained to Calcutta May 1831. Joined the Free Church in 1843; missionary at Chinsurah; DD (St Andrews); returned to Scotland 1st February 1862; died 6th September 1865. He was a man of modest, retiring character, an accomplished scholar and astronomer. During a visit to Tasmania, for health reasons, he formed the friendship of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer (then Governor), who desired him to remain as minister to the colonists. On his voyage back to Calcutta he was shipwrecked on the coast of Orissa and narrowly escaped death. He married (1) Christina Paton, and had issue - three daughters (deceased): (2) Elizabeth Mary Shillingford, and had issue - three sons and two daughters.
