In 1869, in the course of a walking tour in the Scottish Highlands, he made the acquaintance of Norman MacLeod, DD, minister of The Barony, Glasgow, who induced him to go to India; appointed Principal of the General Assembly's Institution, Bombay, with instructions to add a college department if possible; ordained (by Presbytery of Glasgow) 5th January and arrived at Bombay 12th February 1870; transferred to Calcutta in 1871 and appointed Principal of the General Assembly's Institution; Examiner for Degrees, University of Calcutta, and Fellow of that University; left Calcutta on furlough 16th February 1877; lectured in the four Scottish Universities on Comparative Theology from a missionary standpoint, 1877-8; took charge of Dalbeattie Parish and of The Park Parish, Glasgow [in absence of Donald MacLeod, DD]; resigned Principalship and returned to Canada; minister of St Andrew's Church, Chatham, New Brunswick, February 1879-81; admitted minister of St John's, Brockville, 5th May 1881; was afterwards minister of St Paul's Church, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; resigned 1893 and withdrew from the Presbyterian denomination on account of altered views on orthodox doctrines; became pastor of the Church of Our Father, Chicago, USA; was later in St Louis; returned to Brockville in 1921; died in New York, 10th January 1924. He was a man of great force of character, widely-versed in philosophy, and a preacher of distinction. He married at Calcutta, 27th October 1873, Agnes (predeceased him), eldest daughter of John Hunter, manufacturer, Glasgow, and had issue - Robert, in New York; Edward, Isle of Pines; Arthur, in New York; Meta (married J. Highee, New Britain, Conn.); Jean Helen (Mrs McTavish), in Winnipeg. Publications -The elements of the Psychology of Cognition (London, 1874); What to Believe (Calcutta, 1876).
